Arts and Crafts Classic Sympathetically updated for Today’s Family Living

This stunning example of renowned Arts & Crafts architect Gerald Jones’s work appears in recent books on Remuera, which feature important New Zealand homes.  Shortly after completing 241 Remuera Road in 1910, Jones published his much heralded essay, “How Houses Might be Improved: A Plea for Art in House Design”.  And there is much evidence of his ‘art’ here in this unique home.

Set on 1459m² of grounds, almost opposite Kings School, it has a floor area of approximately 524m². The exterior is much the same as the original design, with the 21st century additions being sympathetic to the original design.  The main living areas retain numerous original architectural features such as battened panelling, ‘pegged’ beam supports, iron window catches and inglenook fireplaces. The latter still feature the tiles chosen and shipped over to Auckland by Jones, and the ‘beaten‘ copper over the living room hearth still has the original quote ‘East West Hames Best’ - (from a Scottish folk song meaning - Whether you travel east or west, home is the best).

Terry Hitchcock was commissioned by the current owners to update the service areas and add three-car garaging and self-contained guest or staff accommodation. At the same time, the rest of the house was upgraded and sympathetically redecorated. The result is a large family home, situated in an ideal position for easy access to key private and Grammar schools.  It is now ready for the next family to move into and enjoy.

The ground floor features a large panelled entrance hall with fireplace and a large formal sitting room also with a fireplace.  There is also a panelled family room with an inglenook fireplace and French doors which take you out to the front garden, outdoor living and large in-ground pool. Completing the ground floor are the formal dining room and wine room, a spacious laundry and guest bathroom and a large open plan space featuring additional casual dining together with a sunroom adjoining the fabulous galley kitchen.

A grand staircase, complete with landing ‘sitting area’, takes you to the second floor. There is a large central hall off which are four large double bedrooms, a family bathroom plus a charming sunroom. As you would expect, the master suite features a large dressing room and en suite plus another inglenook fireplace and wonderful views of Rangitoto.

To the rear of the house is the three-car integrated garage, with a fifth bedroom suite, including another bathroom above.

From a practical point of view there is also amazing storage throughout the house and plenty of off-street parking, including room for a boat.

But what makes 241 Remuera Road so special is that it is a large, functionally modern home in an extremely sought-after area with a charm and peace all of its own.

This unique property is a true family home in every respect.
